Road Noise

So many photographers that I admire have created their work while traveling, making photographs with loose concepts connecting them using only what the road presents to them. For me, this unifying idea was my job.

The photos in this book are a collection of moments, big and small, from about a year of installing art all over America. I made Road Noise during a period of reflection on my place in America and on the perceptions I had about other states. These preconceived notions of America were as often challenged as confirmed over the roughly one year of making this work. Alongside images which showcase the road life in a diaristic manner are images that address these ideas of America.

The Road Noise book launch had been a long time coming. While I had been making photographs since my first work trip, the idea of making a book came in June of 2022.

This project actually began as two bodies of work. My initial intention was to show the dichotomy of the work from my time on the road and the work from my time at home.

After getting my initial batch of 4x6s printed, I got COVID and suddenly had all the time in the world to get a jump start on figuring out my sequencing. Honestly, without the momentum gained during this period of extreme isolation, I don't think this project would be even close to done at this point, and it certainly wouldn't be the same.

Over the next few months, I would photograph the aspects of the concept that I felt were missing. After some time working with the photos I had, it became clear to me that I needed to let the work from the road breathe on its own.

Only a handful of the photographs from home remain; they're mostly from the office and serve to bookend the rest of the work.
